I love the concentric works on paper of Don Cooper. I’ve been able to stand before these at an exhibit in Atlanta a couple of years ago and feel their silent, meditative power.

Concentricity interests me because of natural patterns like tree rings and water ripples. It’s also very hypnotic and centering. It seems to be a universally understood compositional strategy—even though centered compositions are done a great deal, they never seem to lose their power. Every inch is important—there’s no hierarchy of composition unless it be the very center.

Artist Sara Gee has an interesting process by which she makes concentric ringed drawings. This video shows you how. I would love to see her drawings in person.
